What are Newspaper Wedding Invitations and Save the Dates?

It does what it says on the tin! Simply put, it's Wedding Invitations and Saves the dates, printed on Newsprint paper, AKA real newspapers. You can create them to look like a real tabloid newspaper with headlines, features and articles with columns of text and photos.

Alternatively, you can use the space to create a design that looks more like stationery, with a style that fits your plans, personality and any existing stationery. This also gives you lots of additional space to tell your love story, inform people about your day and have some fun with your invited guests.

Both are great options and a unique way to set the tone for your wedding day and get your guests excited!

Design Tips for Newspaper Wedding Invitations and Save the Dates

Newspaper Headlines

Whether you opt for a tabloid design or for a stationery style design, punchy headlines that grab attention and make people want to read everything is vital. using colour, bold fonts and witty or personalised headlines will help you achieve this.

Think about what would make your guests laugh or smile, you want people to read it and keep it forever, so what wording would do this?

Layout

If you're planning to create a tabloid style newspaper, then the use of columns and keeping everything linear is a must to give the authentic aesthetic. If you want to give it a traditional newspaper feel, use black text throughout or add some dark or bright colours from your palette for headlines or boxes to make it pop and break sections up.

The layout is still really important for stationery style newspaper designs because there is information that you want people to read! You can use shapes and boxes for different pieces of content to make it pop and stand out. You can also add colour and different fonts to keep it more interesting than just being a load of text on a page.

Fonts

Before you choose fonts, think about the overall style of your day. Will it be modern, fun, retro or vintage? Figuring this out will help you understand what the end look and feel will be, meaning you can choose the right fonts to give the desired effect.

For tabloid style wedding newspapers, use Bold, serif fonts for an authentic newsprint effect.

When choosing fonts, ensure that they are easy to read. Some cursive fonts might look good, but are hard to read, so use them carefully. I also recommend using the bold or stand out fonts for the most important information so that people are drawn to it when reading. Don't forget you can increase the font size or use colour to make things stand out too.

I recommend choosing 3 or 4 fonts for stationery style newspapers or several serif fonts for a tabloid style to give 'features' and 'articles' a real newspaper feel.

Pro tip: If you want free downloadable fonts, have a look at dafont.com.

Colours

Use colours carefully, you really want to help set the tone for your day, so thinking about the colours you want to use at this stage is important. If you use the same colour palette from Save the dates through to your Thank You's it will help your guest have the best memories and everything will fit together in their imagination perfectly.

For newspaper style, consider all black and white for a classic look or add bold colours for a more fun and modern look. You may want to consider only the newspaper name and/or photos in colour with all text in black, it's basically personal preference.

Pro tip: use coolors.co to help you create the perfect colour palette.

Design

You can make you design eye catching and interesting by adding photos, images and clipart. Ensure that whatever you add fits in with your style and theme and also uses the same colours. Eg don't use sepia coloured photos for a bright colourful design.

Content Ideas

When it comes to content, there are no rules because it really depends on your plans, honestly anything goes! But I would say, the most important information to include is Ceremony date and time, Location/Venue details, how to RSVP with a deadline date and contact details.

Pro tip: for a comprehensive list of content ideas, this blog post will help you: content ideas for your wedding invitations and save the dates.

Order of Content

The order of your content is really important. imagine a real newspaper, it always has a specific format and order. Generally it has the story of the day, followed by other main news stories, then some staple articles, then the fun stuff. If you translate this to a wedding invitation/save the date newspaper, it would look something like this:

  • intro or headline story [E.G 'We got engaged, save this date' or 'You're invited!']

  • Important info like venue, rsvp, travel and logistics

  • Fun stuff, basically all the personalised things about you and your love story and maybe a crossword or quiz.

Things to Consider for Newspaper Wedding Invitations and Save the Dates

Paper Type & Size

If you're going to print your newspapers yourself, then your design will likely be A4 or A3 folded. You can do this at home or outsource it relatively cheap using standard printing paper.

If you want real newspaper paper, then you will need to get a printer who specialises in newspaper printing [they are pretty rare]. Each printer uses different paper sizes, so you need to decide on the printer to get the correct size to design to before you start.

Printing Costs

If you're printing yourself, this will be low cost. For standard printing, look for local printers who will be able to print in A4 or A3 and deliver cheaply or allow collection. Speak to the printer about what you're printing and consider uncoated or matte paper, which will give a more authentic feel.

If you want real newsprint paper, then in the scheme of printing costs, this is relatively expensive [but so worth it]. For one copy you can expect to pay around £16-19, but the more you order, the cheaper they are per copy. Figure out how many copies you need and then you can get a quote.

RSVP Options

It's easy to think you might do a section to fill in and cut out for RSVPs, but if you really intend this to be a keepsake and want to manage your replies in organised way, I recommend creating a wedding website and putting a QR code [linking to it] in your newspaper instead.

Pro tip: I've created this ultimate guide to creating your own wedding website if you need help.
