I've been running photo press and designing marketing newspapers for other small businesses since 2017, so have I a good idea of what you need from both points of view. My process has changed a lot from the start, centred around giving you the best service and experience that I can, so I know you probably have a bunch of questions about what happens once you're booked in. I've answered the most common and frequently asked questions to help you!
what should I include in my marketing newspapers?
There are so many ideas, it's literally an endless list. It also largely depends on what your business does and when you're giving the newspapers out, but here are a few things I include often:
your branding, branded fonts + colours and logo
Who you are - a bit about you or your business
What you do - What services/products you offer
Who do you work with/for
Testimonials
Qualification or industry badges
Prices
tips and helpful advice
FAQs
Something fun like a crossword or a quiz
lots of photos showing off what you sell
what they need to do to buy/book - next steps
contact details
How do you create the newspaper design?
Whether you have a clear idea of what design you'd like or not, it doesn't matter, I will help you! it really helps me to understand the bigger picture so if you have a very clear brand, website, social media and/or photos, I can really get to grips with what you're about. I also love to get your design ideas so if you've seen things you like, you can send them to me. I'll likely send you relevant previous designs to see if anything sticks too. If you're not sure about any of it, don't worry, we can have a chat and figure it all out together.
One you've sent me everything, I'll review it and organise a video call to chat through everything and ask any questions I have.
What should I send to you?
This depends on the content you have, but usually it's photos and wording. All I ask is that you include a unformatted document [so that I can copy and paste] with details of what you'd like on each page. This isn't set in stone, but it helps me understand the layout and how much content you have.
How do I send stuff to you?
Once you're booked in and I'm ready to start your design, I'll send you a Dropbox folder to drop everything into. This generally suits people, but I'm flexible as long as I can easily access a folder I can copy/download.
what if I don't have a clear brand?
If you know what colours and fonts you use, then that's amazing, but if not, I'll ask you to get a colour palette together via coolors.co and we can discuss what fonts you'd like to use or pick some free ones via google or dafont.com. Bonus points if you are able to provide colours in CMYK format as this is what the newspapers are printed in. If you have hex, then I will use this to get as close a match as possible as it doesn't always directly match.
What format should stuff be in?
Photos/images should be in the highest resolution possible and in .jpg/.png format if possible.
I want a crossword, what do you need?
I have an app for creating crosswords, please just give me a list of 15-20 questions and answers,
How long does it take to create and deliver my Newspapers?
I try to allow a minimum of 2 months lead time from start to finish to give me time to create, approve, print and send the Newspapers to you. I can let you know my availability and expected timescales when you get booked in. If you need the newspapers for a specific date or event, let me know and I'll try my best to accommodate it.
as a general rule, I will get a draft design to you 2 weeks after I have everything I need [we will discuss this over email and video call once you are booked in] and Printing + delivery typically takes 1-2 weeks. Once I receive and package them up,
your Newspapers will be sent by Royal Mail signed for 1st class or Parcel Force Express48 unless advised otherwise. Once posted I'll provide you with the details so that you can track your delivery. Where a delivery is required outside of the UK, this service will be detailed on your quotation and additional fee will be applicable.
